It has been established as a collaborative undertaking by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Indian Institute of Science. The objectives of the Sir Dorabji Tata Centre include carrying out and supporting basic and applied research in the area of Tropical Diseases as well as developing facilities for Research, Development and Training of clinicians and scientists in the area.

Sir Dorabji Tata Symposia

These being are held annually since 2000 in the month of March. The subjects are of importance to India and developing countries.

  • 2000 - Status of Tuberculosis in India,
  • 2001 - Malaria - The Indian Scene and Vaccine Research in India,
  • 2002 - Diarrhoeal Diseases
  • 2003 - Acute Respiratory Disease

The Fifth Sir Dorabji Tata symposium is scheduled on 10th and 11th March 2004. The subject of the Symposium is Leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by some species of genus Leishmania which are obligate intracellular protozans. Transmitted by the bites of species of sandflies. Infections by different species of Leishmania are seen in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas with a total of 350 million persons at rsik. The polar forms are cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, however variations are also seen. Some of the clinical types are zoonoses while the Indian Kala Azar is strictly a human infection. While some of the infections are mild other are naturally fatal. Kala Azar in India has seen resurgence due to proliferation of the vector and developments of drug resistance in the parasite. It is necessary to take energetic action to control the infection.

The symposium covers clinical features, diagnosis, drug treatment, vaccine and prevention of Leishmaniasis in general with an accent on Kala Azar. The faculty is drawn from all over the country and has a significant international contribution. It promises to be informative and with great scientific merit.

There would be a POSTER SESSION on the two days for presentations on related subjects to enable young scientists and research fellows to present their efforts. The number of poster presentations would be limited to 50.
