Sir Dorabji Tata, the elder son of the founder of the house of Tatas,Sir J N Tata, wanted to establish a National Indian School of Research in Tropical Medicine from 1913. He went about it in right earnest around 1920. At that time it appears from the notes of a conference held in Royal Society, London that a comprehensive institute with appropriate clinical faculty was envisaged. Nothing appears to have come out of this effort, and even in the subsequent four decades. Dr. Salaskar, the famous pathologist of Mumbai pursued that the idea lingered on right up to the 1960's with little success.
